The Center for Nursing Excellence (CNE)

The Center for Nursing Excellence is shaped by the strategic direction and goals of the Department of Nursing. A primary mission of the CNE is to integrate education, clinical evidence, research, professional development and technologic innovation to create and contribute to patient care, clinical nursing practice, nursing workflow, and scholarship. A key objective of the CNE’s work is to create, convene and join intradisciplinary and multidisciplinary teams within the BWH, academic and healthcare committees to enhance quality outcomes for patients and families, and to generate and translate new knowledge into practice and invigorate the practice environment.

Scholarship and Academic Partnerships

The Karsh Visiting Professor Program and the Haley Nurse Scientist Program are examples of programs that enrich nursing practice at BWH. Through the Karsh Visiting Professor Program, nationally recognized nursing leaders and clinical experts come to BWH to share their expertise or program of research with members of the nursing community. The Haley Nurse Scientist Program supports nurse scientists from the William F. Connell School of Nursing at Boston College – to conduct research at BWH which will benefit the advancement of nursing practice and improve patient outcomes. Partnerships with area colleges and universities give BWH nurses access to a range of onsite and online degree programs, including opportunities to obtain a bachelor’s degree in nursing or a master’s program in nursing administration.

Global Health Nursing

BWH Nursing is committed to developing programs in global health nursing based on a culturally competent approach that extend the expertise of BWH nurses to those in need around the globe. This benefits the recipients of care, the individual nurse and our BWH nursing community. The first BWH Global Nursing Fellowship began in 2009, with the appointment of a Global Nursing Fellow who spent 6 months in Rwanda teaching nurses obstetrical nursing skills and providing direct care.

Technology, Quality and Patient Safety

BWH is nationally known for our Electronic medical administration record (eMAR) which provides patients and nurses with a safer way to receive and administer medications. Nurses scan a bar code on each patient’s wrist, then they scan their own ID. This ensures that the right medication in the right dose is being given to the right patient. This year, BWH is partnering with Massachusetts General Hospital in the development and implementation of an electronic inpatient record system, which will make patients’ health records more accessible.
